Techniques of Meditation

There are many techniques of meditation, so many in fact that it can be extremely daunting for someone who is looking to take up meditation for the first time. Please don’t allow this to put you off, as most techniques of meditation are very similar in what they are trying to achieve, inner peace and greater awareness.

So, with so many techniques of meditation which do you choose? I have been asked this question many times and my answer is always the same, find a technique which feels comfortable for you, as this will produce the greatest benefit.

Most techniques of meditation fall into 2 main categories:
Mindful meditation - which focuses not on a single purpose but rather, you are aware of all thoughts, feelings, sounds and images that pass through your mind. This technique is said to help you be aware of situations and thoughts rather than react to them, thus allowing you to deal with them in the best way.
Concentrative meditation - these techniques focus on a single image, sound, mantra or your own breathing. This is used to still the mind and allow a greater awareness and clarity of mind to emerge.

My advice would be to choose which category appeals to your personality the most and then try one of the techniques, if you don’t find it comfortable then try another until you find the technique that fits into your life the best.

The course offered by Project Meditation is a concentrative meditation, it is mantra based and very simple to learn and follow, the course guides you through your first few meditations and will help you understand what to expect and what not to expect, this is really important because as a beginner you may find the experiences (or lack of them) are not what you expect, it is very reassuring to know what to expect before you start as you will be able to concentrate on the meditation rather than worrying about are you doing it correctly.
