Drumming Meditation

To understand drumming meditation, you first need to give consideration to meditation itself.  Meditation can involve deliberation, contemplation or relaxation, and each technique is designed to clear your mind and achieve a feeling of being connected and peaceful.  Deep rumination often occurs in the beginning of any meditation session. However, with drumming meditation, the sound and deliberation ensures your mind, body and spirit are aligned rapidly and easily.

On reflection, drumming meditation can be considered a combination of deliberation meditation and sound healing.  The single contemplation and focus is the rhythm you are drumming, and having only one topic for consideration results in your brainwaves lowering and your whole body relaxing.  Add to this the rhythmic rumination sounds emanating from the drums and you have what is thought of as a deep trance-like meditation.  The combination of a group of drummers in deliberation meditation creates a great vibration, enhancing the sound healing aspect for the whole group.

Deliberation meditation is when you are so focused in thought about what you are doing, no further consideration or memories enter your mind.  An excellent example of rumination achieved through deliberation meditation is the simple practice of focusing on walking.  This is known as walking meditation, and the deep contemplation given to each movement of your body while you walk takes you into a state of heightened awareness and relaxation.

Rumination and relaxation through sound is also an effective meditation technique.  Sound healing is an area of alternate therapies where a practitioner will spend time in contemplation giving consideration to what they intuitively feel needs to be unblocked throughout their physical and energetic body.  After much thought, they will select certain instruments, such as drums, chimes and bells, and with great deliberation, use the vibrations emitted to shift these blocks for you.

Drumming meditation can be practiced alone as well.  Simply set aside time for single consideration and meditation, and ensure you are comfortable and relaxed.  Close your eyes and begin drumming a slow beat with total deliberation.  Your only focus is your drumming; the way your hand moves, the way your arm lifts, the feeling of your hand touching the skin and the different sound.  If another thought comes to mind for reflection, simply return your concentration to the drum and your technique.  When you feel a sense of oneness, you may like to change your beat or add beats to your rhythm, and as your rumination deepens, nothing in the world will exists to you accept the drum and your drumming meditation.  Whenever you feel ready, open your eyes and have a stretch:  You will notice how clear from thought your mind is and how refreshed and invigorated you feel.

While drumming meditation is a fantastic way to achieve deep rumination and relaxation, it is also excellent for connecting with your own creative rhythms.  If you always use conscious deliberation in learning techniques, you could be missing your natural intuition for drumming.  Give some consideration to introducing drumming meditation as part of your weekly routine, and you will be surprised on reflection how much you're drumming improves and becomes second nature to you.
