One of the major reasons for weight gain is stress. It’s no surprise that people comfort eat when they are stressed out, but what might surprise you is that stress can interfere with your ability to make wise choices too!
Think about when you are upset about something: do you carefully choose the best foods to eat, or are you so preoccupied that you immediately grab for the first easy thing that doesn’t require much effort?
Stress can also lead to a sense of overwhelm, and when people are overwhelmed they sometimes withdraw into mindless activities like TV watching – and when they’re sitting on the couch watching TV, it’s easy to mindlessly overeat, too!
Stress also causes a spike in cortisol. Cortisol is one of the stress hormones. Its primary function is to send an immediate surge of energy into the muscles, to prime you for the fight-or-flight response. When that energy is burned off, it’s no problem.
However, most modern stresses are emotional in nature and we don’t always have the opportunity to go outside and “run it off.” This means that the levels of the stress hormones remain elevated, and this results in weight gain.
Meditation for weight loss – it can help you release excess weight by addressing all of these common reasons for weight gain.
You will derive tremendous benefit from meditating daily as a form of stress release. In time, this will train your body to release tension and stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, so that excess cortisol can be flushed from the system.
You also develop discipline through meditation. There will be days when you just don’t feel like sitting and meditating, but if you make yourself do it, even for as little as 15 minutes, you can come away from that with the good feeling that you actually do have control over your impulses!
Remember that the next time you’re tempted to eat when you’re not hungry and congratulate yourself on making a wise choice to have a glass of water instead (by the way, the hunger and thirst signals are virtually identical so whenever you feel hungry, make sure you’re not actually thirsty instead!).
One method that is effective in starting to create healthy eating habits is to use guided visualization in your meditation session.
Turn on your MP3 player and settle into a comfortable meditative state with LifeFlow. Then, bring to your mind an image of you at your ideal weight. You might think to yourself, “That’s impossible! I’ll never look like that again!” but you can bypass that kind of thinking by simply agreeing that what you imagine, sure feels nice!
It doesn’t matter if it’s real or not – it just feels good to imagine yourself looking sexy and lean – perhaps in a brand-new wardrobe, enjoying life as you would like to! Play with that imagination for as long as you can. Let yourself enjoy imagining what it would be like, even if you currently don’t believe it can happen!
You’ve got to plant the seed of possibility, and that’s what this focused, guided visualization/feeling will do. The more you practice this good-feeling imaginary state, the more it will come naturally to ‘see’ yourself looking like that and then that will naturally lead to more positive behaviours!
Your imagination is immensely powerful. In effect, when your singular focus is on something, you mentally rehearse it and it’s been proven over and over again that what you imagine right now, will be your life experience in the future.
