Only when you know how to be at peace with yourself, can you be at peace with the world outside.

“The space within becomes the reality of the building.”

This is what famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright once said.

When a building is filled with noise, anger, anxiety, hurry, fear, or sadness – you pick up on the emotions within and your behavior is affected. Think about the difference between a courthouse and a cathedral, or a busy shopping mall and a quiet boutique.

It’s not that one is ‘bad’ and the other ‘good’.

The above quote relates wonderfully to the quiet and peaceful space within you.

When your thoughts are busy and focused on what’s wrong and what’s missing in your life, your life experience is affected and reflects those thoughts. But you can change the ‘vibe’ of your inner space so that it becomes a serene, strong and joyful place that can be your inner sanctuary no matter what’s going on outside, whenever and wherever you are.

There are a few key steps you can take if you’re ready to discover once and for all how to be at peace, the first is to realize that everything is out of your control, except your life and the choices you make.

To feel more peaceful with yourself, you need to be more contented in your life. To do that, you must access that quiet space within you.

Anytime you want, you can enter the ‘inner sanctum’ of your own amazing and unique being, that is free from the hustle and bustle and worry of the world. Taking us away from our electronics, other people, cars and other distraction and noise-producing technologies… as well as offering a reprieve from constant negative mind chatter.

Here are just a few reminders on how to be at peace in a noisy world:

If you don’t already…Learn to smile!

if you want to know how to be at peace, start by smiling more

Peace comes to you so much more easily when you smile. Smiling helps you to feel better and stops negativity from reaching you. Try it for yourself the next time you make a mistake. Instead of going over what went wrong and how you could or should have done things differently, which as you know only leads to beating up on yourself, smile your best smile and laugh it off. You’ll notice that your wonderful smile will allow any resentment and bitterness to melt away.

Get rid of that need to be liked.

You’ve told yourself more than a million times to stop worrying about what others think of you and the need to be liked. If you keep doing this, yes, you might be liked by many, if not most people but I guarantee you will loath yourself. Stop working at being so popular or being liked and instead aim at being yourself. You are enough!

Live in the moment… Cliché? …Yes!…True?… Essential!

When you refuse to let go of the past (and more often than not, this is subconscious) or are anxious about the future, it only keeps you from enjoying the present moment. Life is far less overwhelming and troublesome when you simply focus on ‘right now’. You must find a way to bother less about yesterday and tomorrow. They do not belong in your present moment and you know already that this is all we really have. Becoming just a little more mindful each day will ensure you notice and enjoy each new moment as it comes.

Do the right thing.

It’s far from easy acting with integrity all of the time. If you find it difficult at times sticking to your values and principles or even find yourself confused with what to do, simply do whatever you feel is right at that very moment. That’s really all you can do and the more you practice doing the right thing, you’ll find it becomes your new way of being on a daily basis.

“It’s never wrong to do the right thing” ~ Mark Twain

Embrace your mistakes.

Own up to your mistakes, but don’t beat yourself so that you feel worse. Validate your efforts and motivate yourself to do better. Notice the times when you make progress and revel in that sense of peace when you do something well. Give yourself permission to be gloriously imperfect and allow yourself to make mistakes. When you do this, you really do begin taking responsibility of your own life.

Forgive yourself and others.

When you forgive yourself, you move away from the past and into the present. This is where you will find your true power. This is how to be at peace with yourself. If you don’t forgive yourself and others, self hatred and inner turmoil will slowly but surely eat away your self-esteem, self-respect and confidence. Forgiveness is all about letting go. It is the ONLY road to healing, growth and possibility.

how to be at peace quoteRight NOW… stop comparing yourself to others.

The tendency to compare yourself with others is of course human and no matter how successful you are, you can never completely overcome the habit of comparison.

You will always find something or someone else to focus on. The most unjust thing is, you tend to compare your worst with the best of others. Comparison doesn’t add any value, meaning or fulfilment to your life. It takes it away.

If you only become mindful of this one reminder, you’ll be well on your way to learning how to find peace within.

Do what you enjoy.

You’ll have heard and read this countless times but this is where it’s all at.

When you do what you enjoy, inner peace arises within yourself as if on autopilot. Explore life to find the things you enjoy or love doing. What’s your purpose? Do you want to discover it? Try things out and see how things are when you actually do them. What is it that makes you jump out of bed in the morning? What makes you smile? Where do feel the most liberated? You and I both know we’re only here once as this unique and amazing being.
