I'm having some problems with Project Meditation forum on MS Internet Explorer 9?

My laptop recently auto-updated Internet Explorer to the new version 9.

Since then it's been impossible to use it to post on the Project Meditation forums. The quick reply on a thread takes the cursor down into the editor at the bottom of the thread, but it doesn't blank out the default text of "Please click one of the Quick Reply icons in the posts above to activate Quick Reply." and then if I type something in it and hit the "post quick reply" button it pops up the message "please click one of the quick reply buttons to activate the quick reply". Likewise if I use the quote option and it goes to a different screen to edit it... it does put the quoted text in the editor and I can type what I like, but then when I hit the reply button it errors on the page with "The message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 10 characters." even though I've entered plenty.

One thing I notice about it is that the editors default font appears as Times New Roman rather than Arial (or Tahoma or whichever it used to show as).

In the meantime I'm using Firefox, though they've just upgraded that to Firefox 4 and it has a problem it keeps crashing for no reason. Also ok using Google Chrome, though I'm not that keen on that browser.

Is this something to do with the forum software? I'm ok when I use other sites like healthypages.co.uk forums which is also running vBulletin, though Mike (the owner of that site) has just upgraded it to version 3.7.2 and Project Meditation is still on 3.6.8. Perhaps there's a necessary patch to be applied to deal with Microsoft's wonderful upgrade in IE 9?

I also wonder if anyone else if having the same problem or not? I don't have access to another computer with IE 9 on.

    Hugs

    Giles

    Hi Giles,

    Thanks for the heads up.

I am also noticing these issues (or similar) when using Quick Reply.
I will let you know what I find out.

I normaly use "New Reply" which seems to be working ok but not the "Quick Reply".

Are you using windows 7 or Vista?

Windows Vista, if that makes a difference. I suspect it's just an Internet Explorer thing though regardless of the o/s.

I'm on IE 9 and I've had to click the Quick Reply button within your last post in order to type this message out, I couldn't just type the message straight into the quick reply box, strange issue!

That's normal Ariel, though it differs from forum to forum. The healthypages forum I frequent just allows you to type directly into the quick reply box, whereas project meditation has always required that you click a quick reply button next to one of the posts first.

The issue I've been having is that I click on the quick reply button which jumps the cursor down into the quick reply editor as expected, but the text in that editor is not removed and even if I type a message, when I go to post it, it tells me I've got to click a quick reply button, which of course, I've already done. The functionality definitely changed when my computer upgraded IE from 8 to 9.

    Hi Giles,

I got confused with the quick reply box and the quick reply button.

The quick reply button works as it should for me (I used it to reply to your last message).

Will continue to see if i can find any information about this... I was wondering if you are getting logged out as you try to post (cookies issue etc). It does not make a lot of sense though for this to be happening.

Will update this thread when I find something.

Not getting logged out with it, as I can then go and use the Quote button instead and that works ok.
For some reason the text in the Quick Reply defaults to Times New Roman font, whereas previously it was the usual one that you can see here.
When I'm at home, I'll perhaps clear cookies and everything to just make sure it's as 'fresh' as it can be and see if that helps. Failing that, if I can convince my other half, I'll upgrade her laptop to IE9 as well and see what it looks like from hers.

Ok, I've just tried again and realise I made a mistake in my description. Clicking the Quick Reply button next to any of the posts doesn't take the cursor into the quick reply editor at the bottom. In fact clicking any of the quick reply buttons doesn't do anything at all. :(

I've tried deleting browsing history and cookies to see if that helped, but no such luck.

Well, I've upgraded the other half's laptop to IE 9 and sure enough, I can't use the project meditation forums on her computer either. So it's not computer related, but definitely something to do with IE 9.

    Any further progress on this?

It's still a problem, even though I've done a complete delete of browser history, cookies, temp internet files etc.

Everything works as expected in Firefox and Google Chrome. Just not Internet Explorer 9, and I know it worked fine before IE updated to that version.

    :(

Ok, I found something that may help...

If I add project-meditation.org to Internet Explorer's compatibility-view list (which is used to support websites that only work in older browsers), then it seems to work again.

That would definitely confirm that the issue relates around the forum software and the web pages it is serving, and Microsoft's inability to deal with the code behind those pages in this new version of the browser.

Looks like it may require an upgrade to vBAdvanced and bBulletin etc. Not a small task I know, but certainly something that's going to have to be considered if Project Meditation is going to keep up with the technology.

    Hi Giles,

    Thanks for the feedback.

vbadvanced may be causing the issue as you say... I will send them an email and see what they say... (the forum software needs updating and it may be time to get it sorted now)

"Microsoft's inability to deal with the code behind those pages" (not saying anything :D )

Will let you know how I get on :)
