    Hello! First post.

I started reading The Power of Now this week for the first time. Whenever I try to "watch the thinker" I feel a tingle at the top of my skull. Its like energy is gathering inside my head whenever I try to do that meditation. One time in bed I really felt like I was drawing something up from my spine into the skull.

I'm very afraid of this as it seemes to be staying there all the time now. The tingle has been getting stronger every time I meditate and feels like a slight pressure inside my skull now. Is this normal? Is it supposed to feel this way?

I'm loving the meditation, it gives me some pause from my chatterbox of a mind but I'm very afraid of this pressure thing. Is there a way to release it?

I'm a complete beginner at meditation and never done anything like this.

Hi there and welcome, can you let me know which kind of meditation you are doing? Here's a link to some very good information which explains the principles of both meditation and entrainment. It should put your mind at rest and give you a clear understanding so you can continue enjoying meditation...

I wish you much peace and joy :) :) :)

Thanks, I'll look into that link when I have time. I quess the Discover Meditation cds on this site are worth listening too? I'm just a complete n00b.

I'm doing the "thought watching" meditation explained early in the book The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.

These feelings might be related to stress somehow. I'm currently in a lot of stress due to 6 months of unemployment and counting.

Hi Kalevispatke, my first post too!
I had a similar experience when I did the 10 day course of Vipassana meditation. The sensation got more intense, after I came home, and I worried just like you. Unfortunately, I have not been continuing my meditation regularly. The sensation lasted for a while, after I stopped; but now it is gone! I am actually eager to re-start my practise, since now I feel the sensation proved to me meditation was working. Ofcourse I realized other benefits too! I dropped off, just because of the demands of life, and my addiction to internet browsing, stealing my time!

Anyway, I do not think you have anything to fear from this.

    Yes yes yes! Me too

So glad to hear someone else has had it too. This is all very new for me as well. Also having feeling at times like I'm a foot taller than I was. Like my conscious self is viewing the world through eyes a foot above my head. I feel off kilter like I just put on new glasses and world is brighter and clearer but I'm relearning how to see the world and it makes me feel odd. Not bad just different. It takes hetting used to. Would love to hear others experiences as well. Also would like to know if it subsides as your consciousness continues to shift.

    Fine but not if prolonged

    Hello,

I also experienced that. To be honest, it is very natural as your chakras are working. The feeling is good. As I observed, not only does it happen when one meditates but also when he/she has a great compassion or discovers a truth about life.

Although it is not a harm and if it is from good will, should be encouraged, do not forget that it's just a small stop on our journey. If you love it so much and get addicted to the feeling, you might get lost.

Stay sharp and observe the mechanism, once done, move on and forget it.

    I hope it helps.

it is your chakra, there are seven major ones

once you have knowledge of the placements you can wake them up by thought (just think of the area) opening all 7 during meditation is a great experience

if you keep up the meditative state you will then see your breath (with your eyes closed of course) radiating in the various colours of the individual points

the crown chakra (the one you mentioned) usually resonates for truth and will tingle usually accompanied by an open feeling in the top of the head (although sometimes pressure) and sometimes followed by "clear" moments where a lot of prior knowledge combines with whatever you are currently learning and suddenly makes sense as a whole. colour = indigo

the next one is the pineal gland or the third eye (behind the forehead) this is almost always the last one to awaken in most western cultures due to flouride in the water the easiest way to de calcify it is to concentrate on it and envision a light shining out of it awakening of this chakra is symbolized by the appearance of various faces during the hypnogogic/hypnopompic states. (the period between closing your eyes and sleep, or sleep and opening your eyes) colour - deep blue

the throat chakra is very important to a meditation student as it is this point that evokes the vibrational state. usually makes itself known by either a change in the feeling of air passing through the throat, a feeling like a needle point in the throat (not painful, has a cooling effect) or of course a pulse felt throughout the body. colour = light blue

The heart chakra (located at the solar plexus) is where the pulse is felt strongest and feels like a small weight has been placed there when awake. colour = green

the navel has another one this one also feels like a weight and if you awaken it, it will help to control your breathing during meditation (just try not to make the weight move whilst breathing) colour = yellow

the sacral point near the top of the pubic area will usually pulsate (feels like a slight popping feeling) concentartion on this point seems to create sexual
energy in my experience colour orange

the base chakra is located in the (for want of a better word) taint that is the point between your genitals and your anus. this chackra also feels like popping when awakened. colour = red

the colours in your minds eye are way more vivid than any representation of colour i have ever seen physically. blocked chakras produce a black smoke amongst the colours
