so i had to come on this forum and finally post a thread. i was doing my usual morning meditation, everything was as usual until about ten minutes in. i was doing a cleansing and healing meditation when this very strange sensation came over my entire body. now, the only reason i recognized the feeling was because it was the same feeling i used to get when i would come down with a fever or when i would wake up in the middle of the night while i was sick when i was younger. the only way to describe this feeling is a very odd way to describe a feeling but some of you may know what im talking about. or at least i hope you do cuz i dont have any idea what it is or how to deal with it, i can say its not a bad feeling but it puts me in a very weird mind set so...the first sensation i get is that i feel my body as being really heavy, i mean like my body is millions of times heavier and when i move, every part of my body feels bigger. its like i have shrunk inside my skin and all of a sudden my extremities are long and awkward and heavy. my hands feel tingly and my fingers feel bigger than they are, when i sit and focus on the feeling it becomes stronger and i feel like my body is slipping away, where? i dont know exactly...so this whole thing is kind of strange. i used to hate the feeling when i was young and now when i experience it i dont know whether its a bad or good thing because it feels so dang weird. if anyone has similar stories or have any advice i am al ears! i dont want this to hinder my meditation practice because honestly, i dont like the feeling

What kind (method...ie visual, sound etc) of meditation are you doing? Perhaps you can perform a type of "reverse method", prior to "coming out" of your sessions..

    Hi meditron,
I'm new to this board but I'm not new to meditation. I've had the feeling you describe several times especially when I was younger as you did. It's one of the more unpleasant meditation sensations in my experience. Not harmful or dangerous, just annoying. The thing to do is to focus again not on the sensation but on your focus of meditation be it a mantra or whatever. That's the basic thing to do whenever you get "sidetracked' from the focus of meditation, just go back to the practice and avoid focusing on what some have called the scenery or sideshow. Just keep going back to the mantra or your breath or whatever. If you need to you might move your hands or take a few deeper breaths for a few moments to shake of the sensation and then go back to your mantra. Hope this helps.

If you are using visualizations as part of your meditation then that in fact may bring on the sensation you describe. I base this on my own experience as whenever I had that strange feeling it came about during a very focused visualization. As a kid I was especially good at this. I still use visualization from time to time and it's a good method I think but if you keep having this type of weird feeling then as a suggestion you might try a different type of focus.

    Hello Meditron,

I would not be described as someone who really practices any type of meditation on a regular basis. How I came about your post was by using google and searching strange sensations while meditating.......Over the past several years I have occasionally done a little digging on a strange sensation I get during particular times. I have always had a hard time describing the feeling and up until today, I have have no luck finding anyone else with similar experiences. As I started reading your post I slowly began to realize....could it be....someone else? You have described my sensation almost exactly....In fact, everything you said you experienced...........I have also. Starting when I was young and when I was sick or had a fever. I am 39 now but I still remember that. While I have experienced every symptom you described, I have had an extra symptom, which of course is hard to explain. I see your post was over a year ago and I have no idea whether you will see this or not. Just wanted a chance to compare notes. Hopefully, you will get back on here and reply.

Hi, I having just googled these same sensations to see what they were all about and found your thread, hope you dont mind me posting!

I'm 32 years old now but I also first got the very same sensations when I was younger (about 13 years old) and was ill and had a fever. I vividly remember them to this day and can recreate the same sensations, even if i'm just sitting here doing something else. I dont meditate as a regular thing daily but I do occassionally.

The feeling is as though my limbs are very heavy like a dead weight, its almost as if I go into myself and even though i'm not moving the sensation all over is as though everything is very hard and sharp, weird to describe really!

I feel as though if I carry on i'm going to go into another world ha! Strange

Just wanted to say the same as last two posters in this thread...I felt this weird feeling while meditating. The same feeling when I was young and I had a fever .. I remember this feeling very well. Then I googled "my body becomes heavy when i meditate", found this forum and was fascinated to find that people actually know this feeling ... because when I was younger I thought it was undescribable and no one would ever understand what I'm talking about so I didn't tell anyone about it.

hope to find more insight about it:)

    Wow,

I really would not have guessed anyone would have had that feeling before. I had the same thing when I was young sometimes when I was sick and sometimes when I was very relaxed (which was not often when I was young). I would get the feeling of over powering heaviness and would feel huge. I would also hear a loud deep noise which to me as a kid always sounded like a deep voiced guy yelling. In recent meditation I started getting these again while some have said the did not enjoy them to me this was the most enlightening feeling I have had so far. It was almost paralyzing where I felt as if my hands could not move. The deep sound I interpreted and life's energy. I also was feeling or seeing flashes of light in my head and a visual of them coming out of my body. I then also felt very long and my breaths had to travel to my lungs and belly. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Hi, I had this very same feeling during meditation this morning. After about 20 minutes I started to get a really strange heavy feeling. It was like there was a pressure being exerted on my body and it was getting stronger the longer I stayed with it. It also felt like my arms were stretching or becoming longer. I was alert and not drowsy so wasn’t falling asleep. I chickened out and opened my eyes which relieved it somewhat. On resuming, it was still there but less overwhelming and not what I’d call unpleasant, just weird. I’ve had paralysing dreams when younger, where I was alert but couldn’t move, this felt similar.

Maybe it’s just me getting more absorbed into the meditation or am I doing something wrong?

    Feel very heavy sensation

I used to have a similar feeling when I was young about 6-7 years old, I felt like a million ton and would swing from far distance. I would even fly from space and could see the planets below. Now after about 30 years while meditating I felt the same feelings being heavy a million tons, now that I could realize that it's just a weird sensation whatever I thought of was instantly heavy for example my eyelids and my wrist. I thought I was only the one feeling this way. However is it just the few of us who has this strange feelings?? I would often think that I was spiritually gifted!!!! There are at least 4 of us who felt the strange sensation..

Wow... I have had some too

When using Gamma I sometimes have similar sensations. I called it the hall of mirrors because it feels like my body is slipping away and all i can see is this large hall of mirrors and I peer into my own soul. I was also using a transcranial stimulator, though...

I would maybe try a different meditation method. It sounds like the one you are doing may not be compatible with your psyche?

    Hi all,

I stumbled onto this meditation forum / thread when I was googling / researching the exact same sensations that have been described by others, & which I also used to experience when I was younger. It also happened to me on a few occasions when I was sick / had fever; I was awake / conscious & my body would just feel extremely heavy & paralyzed, like the weight of the universe was weighing down upon me. I remember my mom & brother putting me in the bath trying to help me, it was so hectic & I found it extremely scary! It felt like I was in another world, so so strange! I do take comfort having found, through this thread, that I'm not alone in this and there are others that have experienced the same sensations, & I hope you all do too! I recently came up with the theory that it may have been my brain's / mind's interpretation to / reaction to stress, no idea though, just a theory like I say. I wonder if it's one of those cosmic things that are beyond the realms our comprehension. Anyways, look forward to hearing from others who have had similar experiences. Cheers!

this is good to talk about

yes, I am grateful you posted this. I had this feeling in my childhood too, but not necessarily with fever or sickness.
Feeling suddenly like a GIANT Marshmallow Man, with HEAVY limbs, and somehow being forced to remain calm, but still having the strength and the will to move my body, so the sensation would become weaker or being able to interrupt it for a moment. And then coming back again. Like something, or some BEING or Ghost or undefined consciousness entering my body, staying there for a while, and then leaves.

To cut a long story short, I dont necessarily have to meditate to have it, it just comes, like in my childhood, when i am in bed, about to go to sleep. THIS SENSATION OCCURS NOT OFTEN. Maybe ONCE a YEAR.

One person I have met said to me this is the guardian angel, visiting me, entering my body to check everything is alright.
