Default Commitment

At some point I decided that there were no half measures. I have always led a busy and crowed life. In the very early days of my practice I thought I could get by with a “bit of meditation”.

But the more I sat, it became apparent that a way of limitless life requires on my part openness, generosity and simplicity. Above all it requires commitment. Not a commitment to a cause or ideology but commitment in my own life to the simplicity of the daily return to the roots of my own existence, a commitment to respond to life with attention, to create a space in my own life to live fully.

What I have learnt in meditation, in the silence of it and in the simplicity of it, is that I have nothing to fear from the commitment to creating this space.

I think that many of us fear commitment because it seems to be a reducing of our options. I often see on this forum concern about committing to meditation as it will limit our ability to do other things in our busy lives.

But I think what all of us find is that this fear dissolves in the actual commitment to be serious, to be open, to love not out of the shallows of our being, but out of its depths. What I find in the experience is that my horizons are expanding, not contracting, and I find not constraint, but liberty.

Olmate, I think you are so right and this is so true. A wonderful revelation yet so difficult to share. So, all we can do is enjoy and continue to hopefully share the peace and joy of the quiet within each of us
