Hello everyone. I really need your help. I'm 18 and I recently started meditating. Through some research on internet I've read that some people had negative effect on their ability to think. Because of their "mind clearing", it was harder for them think deeply or recall memories. I had that problem already developed for some years, and my actual goal trough mediation was to "cure" that problem. It affected my studies, and personal life sometimes. Now I'm afraid to continue my mediation. Help me please. Thank you.
Hi Jorah and welcome to the Project Meditation Community,
Meditation cannot prevent you from thinking deeply, in fact it is more likely to assist you in maintaining awareness so that you are not distracted when you need to think about something.
I'm sure if you research the internet you will always find conflicting information about all sorts of things, and often it's those who are against certain practices who will try and put out scare stories about them.
Meditation may allow emotions or past repressed/supressed memories to surface, and then you will choose to learn to accept that they are in the past and not needed in the present. This may seem like a negative effect of meditation, but in fact it's beneficial in the long run.
Thank you so much Giles. This is just the response I needed. Hopefully, meditation will give me the peace that I need. I will keep you on track of my progress. Again, thank you, and I wish you all the best.
