Default motion sickness

Hi All,
Has anyone else had an experience like this? I have been susceptible to motion sickness for as long as I can remember. I flew a couple of weeks ago, always a motion sickness event. I had listened to LifeFlow 10 for a month, and had just started 9 a couple of days earlier. When I started to feel sick on the plane, I put on the LifeFlow 9 and tried to rest, and within 5 minutes I felt completely better! So odd, that has never happened. The next two flights I took, I managed to nip the whole episode in the bud, by listening to it on the plane before feeling sick (one of those flights had a bunch of turbulence). The other odd thing was that on the plane, I could hear the water sound, but none of the other sounds, because the plane was so loud, but it helped anyway. I am also sleeping a little better. Any ideas why this is? Anyway, that was amazing for me, a very practical help.

Welcome to the community SuzyV. This must be a great relief for you

I've never experienced motion sickness however I used to have real problems getting a good nights sleep and it's priceless to be able to sleep well now. My life is vastly improved since I began regularly meditating with LifeFlow and using the tracks in the many ways they have been designed to help outside of meditation too.

I have found the benefits of meditation to be vast and life changing. One little, unusual change that came about a few years ago is that I know exactly when I have had sufficient to eat. In particular, on holidays or at Christmas, when many people can tend to over indulge (as I have done in the past) even if the most delicious foods are available, I only ever eat just enough and I can only put this down to regular meditation.

Here's a piece from a recent study on entrainment that mentions sleep as one of the benefits:-

Motion sickness arises from the combination of the visual senses and the 'balance' sense created within the eardrum. As the ears detect the body moving it correlates this movement with what the visual senses are perceiving, and also with the motor actions of the body (if we're doing something at the time), and the mind is expecting them to be in sync. That's why most people with motion sickness are ok driving a car themselves, as they are controlling the movement and the motion the ears experience correlates with what the eyes are seeing and what the movement of their body was causing to happen; yet the same people can more easily feel motion sickness as a passenger, though perhaps less so if they keep their eyes on the road ahead (so perceive what the motion should be).

If a person with motion sickness sleeps, then typically the mind will rest and the need for correlation reduces, hence they experience less of the sickness. The same applies with meditation or other relaxation techniques, as the focus is taken away from correlating all the senses, and things are just allowed to Be, with the mind's activity lessened and elsewhere.

In terms of what Polly has referred to, the mind is the underlying cause of the stress (due to it's inability to correlate all the perceived senses), so it creates chemical changes in the body, which are then felt physically.

As someone who experiences motion sickness myself in cars, I'm fine when I'm driving, or when I keep my eyes on the road, and I can even go on amusement park rides (rollercoasters and the like) providing I have some visual perception of where it's going; and usually the rides are so short that the sickness doesn't have time to get going. The people who tend to feel more sickness from such rides are those who try and look elsewhere (taking 'selfies' on their phone etc.) or those who close their eyes through anticipated fear.

Giles,
Your post makes a lot of sense. My main strategy for avoiding motion sickness in cars has been to pretend that I am driving the car when I am a passenger. Eyes ahead on the road! It does help immensely. Not something I can do on planes. It is so interesting that this worked on the plane, and continued to work after listening. Its a confirmation that something is happening in my brain.

This has been my problem with meditation. I don't find any way to verify whether I have meditated, or if I have just attempted to meditate but not accomplished it. So now I know if I listen to LifeFlow while attempting to meditate, something is definitely being accomplished.

Congratulations! So glad that you're able to eventually overcome motion sickness. I have the same issue and will post a thread for it.
