Default Which path is right and provides you more bliss?

We all know the nature of the ego each one of us possess. Our material cravings make us encounter pains in our lives. But each of us must undergo pain and do our best in order to achieve our goals, right?

We do our tasks everyday. We do more, investing our energies and learning our lessons from the past in order to make ourselves more capable in achieving our goals. But what is the point of all of these? After all we die and our worth in heaven is measured on how we live our lives.

We pray because we want to have peace of mind to give our whole selves to God. But could it be true that we pray because we just want to be more stronger so that we could remain firm in achieving our goals?; We pray because prayers could provide miracles and those prayers could answer our material needs?

Everyday we live our lives full of competition; we sin and then we confess again in order for us to restore our relationship with God. No matter how we totally give ourselves to God, we still live for ourselves because that is the reality of the material world.

I know this is a general issue but how what can you say about this? It's true that we are living in a very materialistic world and I really hate all those selfish people building their kingdom on this earth; I even hate my own self-- not my own nature but my ego because it gives me more pain as I achieve my goals and attain a sense of pride to myself.

I'm not sure if you've seen this article before, but I think reading it will help.

What your ego is and how to stop it from obscuring your inner peace and unconditional love | Personal Development - UrbanMonk.Net
---
Nearly everybody lives in ego mode. Their entire self image is based off of external things that happen, and typing that out now made a part of my mind wonder "Wait, do people really do that?". I guess it's been so long since I was that way I kind of forgot what it was like...

Anyway, since they live their lives in that mode, their goals become all the more important. They've invested their personal selves into it. That's why people are always telling you to follow your dreams. It's a way to be happy. The funny thing is that if you've invested your "self" into it ( and you think you have a personal stake in your happiness) you're in for a lot more pain before you finally reach your goal.

Reaching your goal finally after a long time can feel very good. But you'll soon realize that after you've attained your goal, you feel like you don't want it anymore. It's not as awesome as you thought it would be (that's almost always the case too when your goal is to fulfill a sort of selfish desire). The reason you can't just enjoy your reward is because the mind found an identity in the struggle to achieve your goal. While you receive momentary relief from all the stress you endured, and maybe an intense feeling of happiness (most people can't feel its' shallowness because they're drenched in stress all the time) your mind will soon ask the question "Well, now what?"

The mind can do all sorts of things to solve this problem, like purposely create more problems. Having problems to solve is the mind's identity when you're constantly in ego mode.

Such is the reason most people seek material success. First they want money. After that they want power. Then "love". Then big houses and big cars and so on and so forth.

People don't have a choice in this because they don't realize there is one. So then your social culture starts to think that success and happiness lies in power and money. It can propagate a mindset of WANT WANT WANT and a ton of people can get caught in this snare. For them, it's merely a way to get by. If they don't have something to keep striving for, then for them they think all that's left to do is die. They don't want that burden in their minds. If someone thinks they have nothing going for them that's their chance to a.) become enlightened and become in touch with their nature or b.) create suffering for themselves

It all stems from a fear of death. People are scared, so they distract themselves with these things.

When you are in touch with your nature, you can enjoy the material world even more because you know it can't bring any lasting happiness and you don't depend on it. You can value it for what it's worth, a bunch of shiny things! It's fun, but not all there is to life.

Think about it, people put so much importance on finding a good job, so they can get money, and continue to survive. But they want their jobs to be high paying so they can buy nice things. That's their sense of fulfillment, to be able to buy nice things in life. People can do this for various reasons, most of which you can figure out.

A lot of people can live life seeing through this dysfunction. There are lots of people who can be grounded without meditation or delving in the area of self-improvement. These people live life true to their intentions.

And that's what it's all about in living in the physical world. Your intentions. Are your intentions with reaching a goal to feel better about yourself? Are your intentions for becoming a doctor or something to make as much money as you can? Or do you truly feel like your purpose for this is in helping people?

Not all religious people think selfishly. Some of the nicest most genuine people in the world i've met are people who have devoted their lives to their idea of God.

But i'd say a large majority of them believe in a god and preach so much because they find it comforting that death will not be non-existence. Now, I KNOW for myself that death is not the end, but people only believe (identification with a thought) in a God so they don't have to worry about what happens after death. But that's only because they're not grounded in their nature. I've even heard it for myself. There was a person in a class of mine who said that he believed in God because "it makes life easier to believe that there is something after life". I thought this was disheartening because God is just an idea he likes to think about, nothing real for him. And second because he doesn't truly enjoy life.

But since people don't TRULY know God, they continue to be stuck in the egoic mode of their mind...and to shorten it, it all comes from a fear of death.

I know it can be irritating to know that people parade around the supposed word of God and then continue to act selfishly, but know that it is a defense mechanism. It all comes down to fear.

I want you to understand this, so you can let go of hating the materialistic world and see it for what it is. Not all in life is vanity, and not all people live life selfishly. I used to believe that everybody is basically selfish, but I experienced another side of life for myself. Of course, this is all my own perspective, so take whatever you want from it. There's so much more to be said, but I feel i've covered what's relevant. Good day to you

Hello again midnight! Wow! You are incredible. Are you a philosopher? I'd like to ponder about what you'd written. It's hard to understand.

Oh thank you

I have a tendency to use unnecessarily complicated words when i'm flowin' on my soapbox. If you need anything to be cleared up, i'd be more than happy to help.

Reading back, I could've cleaned up some of it to make it more readable. I was typing this in the early morning before breakfast, haha.

Hi Volcom23,

It is good you ponder these questions. The path of discovery is amazing.

I personally have found the work of Dr David R Hawkins very useful to help me see new persoectives of "God". My sense is you would find much to ponder in his book entitled Discovery of the Presence of God. It is freely available on most book stores on line.

One profound insight for me many years ago was my view that somehow I was separate from God. Maybe all of those years of conditioning which bought up imagery of an bearded man sitting on a cloud with a big book of life cradled in one arm, peering down at me watching my every move, thought and action.

My perception is far removed from that perspective now. This, I hasten to add doesn't make the earlier perception wrong as at the time it was probably appropriate to my ability to perceive anyway. I guess the point I am trying to make is that our understanding evolves. And part of the evolution process for me is learning, study under a Teacher, mediation practice, healthy lifestyle, connecting with my comunity (including this one), etc., etc.

Your inquisitive nature will take you down many paths. Smile that gentle smile to the real you and concentrate on the path you are on right now.

Take care,

Olmate

This is just probably the effects of my meditation practice I bet. I belong to the INTJ personality and I always think about the complexity of life. Maybe this meditation practice that I'm doing could help me answer my questions. I'm always confused sometimes and I tend to be stressed by my thoughts. In addition, I'm emotionally unstable right now considering my anxiety problems. I'm always anxious and I'm always horrified by the negative news happening everywhere. That's why I really hate television. Anyway, I'm always looking forward to my meditation practice. Eventually I will know the answers of some of my confusing questions.

Hey Volcom,

You know if TV isn't helping you at all, it's okay to not watch it. That's what I do. Aside from a few days (like this week, because it's shark week ) I rarely watch TV. Too much of it is mindless and not useful to you. Even the news. News stations are all about shock value than delivering the facts. The people seem to be attracted to it (not really sure why, but i'd say the underlying pain that are not aware of seems to be attracted to it). Since so many people watch it and absorb it like a sponge because of their unawareness of what's really going on, it tends to sharpen the fear they feel. It can affect their thoughts.

Newscasters prefer using a darker word choice that affects people more. It's to get more viewers. If you could just get the straight up facts about a story, the news industry wouldn't be an industry like it is today. It's not really because they're evil or anything, it's a business, and a business has the right to do what it can to grow.

Until you've let go of the emotions you feel towards TV and the news, it's probably best to stay away from it for a while. Speaking from personal experience, you're much better off without it anyway

As Midnight indicates, journalism in the newspapers and TV is more about sensasionalism and highlighting the 'bad' things. It's unfortunate, but many people in this world want to make their own lives feel better by looking at other people's misfortune (hell, we even have programs dedicated to it e.g. "You've been framed!" etc.) and journalism plays on that. They know exactly what they're doing, and that's why news programs often have a load of negative, bad news to tell you and then they finish off with some sloppy sentimental 30 second story at the end as if that will make you feel better.

Yes, there are lots of things going wrong for people in the world, but there are 60+ billion people in the world and there is a handful of stuff that is negative in comparison to all the positive or neutral stuff going on (i.e. people getting on with their lives and often having a good time). They wouldn't sell newspapers or get people interested in the tv news if it was just full of positive stories, yet it's out there.

So, I too don't buy newspapers, and I don't watch the TV news, except for breakfast TV news which lasts just a couple of minutes and provides the general highlights of what's going on. That way I can keep up with current affairs (useful to discuss with work colleagues and know what they're on about), whilst not getting deeply involved or entangled in it.

Most of the news is rubbish. It doesn't directly effect me in my life and whilst it's good to keep an idea of what's going on elsewhere, there's really little point in me taking it on too deeply and letting it rule every minute of my day. I've got far too much other stuff to be getting on with and I can be more useful to the people I'm directly involved with in the present moment. By all means, if there's something I can do to assist on a national or world level then I'd do it, but most of the time, it's just beyond the scope of what I can achieve and I recognise there's no point in me literally wasting my time on it.

Hugs

Giles
