Hi Kent,
Welcome to the community

.
If you haven’t already downloaded and listened to the free meditation course from this site I’d recommend you do so, but to answer your questions.

You can be absorbed in a thought or you can be aware of the thought.
When you get
absorbed in a thought you get carried a long on a mental journey somewhere, it could be your past/present/future, a new idea or a flight of fancy, whatever it is you will be absorbed and then suddenly you’ll become aware of your surroundings again.
When you’re
aware of a thought, it pops up and you objectively consider it, perhaps you think “that’s silly” and it drifts off, or maybe you think “yeah, I must do that”, but in these cases you don’t go on that mental journey, so in this instance your just noticing (or being aware) of the thought.

In meditation the general idea is to not get absorbed or caught up in thoughts (or emotions) during meditation, simply observe in a detached way. So when you notice a thought pop up, just notice it and let it drift by. This is where you mantra is helpful because if a thought pops up, your mantra should help prevent you from getting caught up in thoughts as the mantra will be your focus, not the thought. The thought will then drift off, if it doesn’t, no worries, let it stay there just relax and carry on with you mantra.
It’s worth being aware that you will get caught up in thought at various times, don’t worry about it, just return to you mantra once you realise, its no biggy, happens to everyone. Meditation is meant to be relaxing so don’t stress/worry about doing it “exactly right”, just watch your thoughts during mediation and gently focus on your matra.
Hopefully thats a help, if not just ping a post back.
Cheers, Paul
