Default Mind Chatter

Hi
Have been meditating with lifeflow for 2 weeks now although not a very experienced meditator, I do get a lot of mind chatter does anybody else experience this and is this normal. Also tend to get quite emotional. I do have thyroid issues ie: Graves disease maybe due to that. Anyway will continue as am sure am experiencing positive outcomes as well.

Hi Ali,

yes it's quite normal to have thoughts, especially in the early days

When thoughts come, just let them go like passing clouds. Focus gently on your mantra until you become quiet, then let your mantra go and slip into the stillness. When your thoughts interrupt again, just let them go and gently focus on your mantra again. The time you spend in the stillness, even a few seconds is of great value.

With practise you will become more and more proficient

I wish you much peace and joy

Not only is it normal, it is a very positive sign. Meditation enables you to step out of being caught up in your thoughts so that you can start to observe them and as Pollyanna says, just let them drift by. So by becoming aware of a lot of mind chatter is actually a positive thing, it shows that you’re stepping outside of your thoughts, definite progress .

You’ll have times when mind chatter increases during mediation and also decreases, just observe it and don’t worry about it.

This could be suppressed emotions coming to the surface due to meditation, but that’s just speculation as it could be one of many things triggering them (and I'm certainly no Dr ). Having said that, just keep an eye on them and if they start to feel negative and overwhelming then it’d probably be a good idea to reduce the amount of time your meditating each day just as a precaution.

Hello, glad to hear you have experienced the sillence now. For anyone else reading this I will add my 2c. I am a newb too but I recently had a revelation that really helped me. I had mind chatter that I thought I would never get rid of at the start and I never really understood exactly how to let thoughts go. I would do this and then another would pop up imediately in its place and I kept getting stuck on the thought train of 'I can't get my damn mind to be quit'. Then I suddenly realised that the chatter was ok and I accepted it. All I had to do was not build on any thought and follow a train of thoughts. After I accepted the mind chatter I started to get brief moments of silence. A few sessions later I would get very extended moments of silence. Now I get really long ones.

Just a note on the mantra, maybe I didn't give it long enough but I wasn't really able to get it to work for me (although I will go back and try it out now that I have more experiece). I found that focusing on my breathing worked best for me. I noticed at the end of the exhale in that tiny pause that I was experiencing total silence and this kind of taught me what it was like so I was able to let go of the breath focus and just have nothing.
