Am I doing this right?

I've only been meditating for the last fortnight or so consistently, but I'm unsure whether I'm actually meditating or just wasting my time. I do have a mantra, that I try to keep in my head, and I have occasionally been listening to the LifeFlow demo CD.
I often drift off track, and find thoughts popping into my head, and sometimes I see strange images, but I know I'm not dreaming or anything. At other times, it's almost like I'm in the state between wakefulness and sleep, sort of like I'm semiconscious, and my mind is almost completely blank. Earlier on, I made the mistake of meditating too late at night and fell asleep.
I'm not entirely sure what I should be feeling when I have meditated and done it properly. My friend thinks that the 'semiconscious' state is what I should be aiming for, but she has very limited interest or knowledge in meditation.
So am I doing this right?
