There are two types of writable CD’s, ‘write once’ which are normally labelled CD-R and ‘rewritable’ which are normally labelled CD-RW. As you aware the ones you’re using fall into the first category which can unfortunatly waste a load of CD space and a bit of money. The ‘rewritable’ ones enable you to write more than once to a CD (but you’ll never be able to remove/delete files you've burnt onto the CD).

I’d be surprised if there was much variance within a pack from the same supplier but stranger things have happened. They'd differ between suppliers because as with most things, you normally get what you pay for, so maybe get a couple of more expensive CD’s and see how you get on?
Having said all that, if you have used the same types/brand of CD-Rs, the same CD burner and the same stereo then this is a bit of a head scratcher

. As you say you’d expect it to either work all the time or not work at all so there must be some subtle variation somewhere. I could only speculate where that could be (the software your using, the settings of the software, steps you follow each time, etc), so I can’t offer much more help

PS: Just seen Giles's response, but thought I'd throw this in the mix anyway
