Standing Meditation

Practiced by a wide variety of martial arts schools, standing meditation is a simple technique that combines wellness of body with a focus on inward contemplation. Standing meditation is a unique and versatile form of meditation, a method where the qi, the life energy of an individual is activated and enriched.  Through the tradition of standing meditation, small day-to-day activities are energized and imbued with a sense of tranquility.

Called the "million dollar secret of qigong," standing meditation takes advantage of the fact that simply standing on your feet is the best posture for channeling and grounding life energy, or qi.  This meditation draws from schools of Buddhist, Hindi and Daoist meditation, as well as adding the vitality from several schools of martial arts.  The combination of reflection and physical awareness is a powerful one that can be harnessed by its practitioners.

Another name for standing meditation is Wuji, which refers to culturing the void or emptiness that becomes the foundation for movement.  In this, standing meditation becomes an exercise in potential energy.  As the energy is gathered up, it becomes a tool of the practitioner, something he or she can unleash with impressive results.  This is a state that encourages inner deliberation and rumination, while refusing to sacrifice knowledge of the outer world.

Besides the cerebral aspect of this meditation, there are a multitude of physical benefits as well.  Standing meditation calms and clears the mind, in addition to contributing to a deep sense of wellness and stability.  The posture is a solid one, allowing the individual to draw power from the earth itself.

It might seem a contradiction to believe that wellness can occur due to standing still, but after a moment's thought, it becomes obvious.  There is a certain amount of stamina that is necessary to hold a position for even a minute, and standing meditation can increase strength and flexibility and also relieve chronic pain.

Standing meditation also aids in the need for a person to relax.  This meditation has also been shown to promote better sleeping habits.  As the body stretches and relaxes, the mind does so as well.  Especially once a routine has been started, standing meditation can cue a mind to enter a state that is receptive towards sleep.

To begin practicing this highly valuable meditation, you merely need to be standing with your feet firmly on the ground.  As you close your eyes, feel the earth through the soles of your feet.

Picture yourself as putting down deep roots that draw nourishment from the soil.  Anchor yourself in your position and keep your knees from locking up.  At this point, your mind should be open and as far away from its stresses as you can get it.

Reflect on the fact that while you are rooted, you can also be swayed, and rock your body gently from foot to foot, feeling your weight shift as your feet compensate.  Energize your arms and allow you fingers to move.  Think about how receptive you are and how the least motions can shift your whole frame.

As you open your eyes and bring your mind back to the present, you should feel more awake and stretched.  Try this exercise at home, at work, or even in the check-out line.  There is no limit to benefits you could have from this simple exercise.
