Health Meditation

To improve health meditation is being practiced worldwide. Whether you are looking to enhance your physical or psychological health meditation is certainly worthy of your contemplation and consideration.

Meditation is thought to have originated in the spiritual traditions of East. Over the centuries it has been practiced by Buddhists, Hindus and many other cultures including the early Christians. There is no need to belong to any religious group or have any religious convictions at all to practice it. When it comes to your overall health meditation has many benefits for both mind and body. Put simply meditation is turning off the minds chatterbox and focusing on relaxation. There are many different ways to meditate. Some practitioners sit, silent and motionless, for hours on end--often in uncomfortable positions or some may chant or use repetitive words or phrases. Others may use a form of walking meditation. Yet some practitioners use a form of either rhythmic or frenzied dance. The most common forms of meditation come from Buddhism and Hinduism and meditate by using such techniques as one repeating a mantra, focusing on breathing, or concentrating on a candle flame.

When we are stressed our bodies produce a hormone called Norepinephrine. This hormone causes our heart rate to increase and our blood pressure to rise. For improving health meditation blocks this stress hormone and when you meditate regularly, you can control stress levels adequately.  It also aids in concentration with many sports professionals meditating regularly as studies have shown direct links between mediation and improved performance levels.  As an aid to your health, meditation can help you control and strengthen your mind, which in turn aids physical responses.

With regular practice it is not only your minds health that improves but also your physical health. Meditation, although thought of as a spiritual practice, has many other benefits, including increasing the blood flow and slowing your heart rate. It can lower your oxygen consumption and decrease respiratory rate, it decreases muscle pain and tension and is wonderful for the relief of headaches. To improve good health and well being meditation also raises our levels of serotonin. Low levels of serotonin have been associated with insomnia, headaches, depression and also obesity. Allergies, arthritis, asthma and other chronic conditions can all be improved by meditation as too can PMS and the side effects of viruses. It can be useful in post operative healing and meditation also improves our immune system and aids in producing antibodies which kill bacteria and cancer cells.

You can meditate for fitness and to promote well being at home by sitting on a mat or in a comfortable chair and either repeating a word or mantra and/or focusing on a candle flame. Pick a time when you are unlikely to be disturbed, turn off your TV or radio, unplug your phone and just relax. You may wish to find a good teacher and go to classes, which are a help to begin with, or alternatively, purchasing a CD or DVD for home use may suite you better. Whatever way you decide to improve your health meditation techniques offer a natural alternative that may be practiced at any time, alone or in combination with medical therapies.
