Strange sensation when meditating

    I was hoping someone could shed some light on the following experience I have when meditating especially when I'm concetrating on my Chakra's.

    As I work my way up my body I get a sort of vibrating/tingling sensation in the centre of my forehead just above the brow.The deeper I go with the meditation the stronger the sensation gets. It also happens without meditation but only when I'm very concious and aware of my presence.

    I'm pretty new to meditation and I'm just finding my way with it so I was hoping somebody could possibly explain this for me.

    yea i know the feeling. might be common, but i don't know it's nature..
    i often enstrenghten it even, cause it can easily carry you very very deep..

    It's not unpleasant, just a bit strange.
    It's like a gauge, the better the meditation session the stronger the vibration. The vibration can last for hours afterwards especially when I've completed a Chakra meditation.

    I've looked online and I've read some info on the Pineal Gland which is located in the centre of the brain and supposed to be linked with the Third Eye. This supposedly vibrates when stimulated.

    If anyone has another theory I would love to hear from them :D

    Actually I was thinking the same thing !

    In a way I am a bit jealous even, since I don't have a "meditation-succes-gauge" like you ;)

    Stimulating the Pineal Gland seems to be exactly what you want to do, since the hormones produced by this gland are amongst others natural drugs, and may be the very hormones you need for deep relaxation !
    Also the hormones Michael talks about that are beneficial for your health are said to be located there...

    Could you describe for us what your meditation looks like, start to end ? I want to see if copying your meditation will create the same effect with me !

    This is niiiiice,

    If you meditate on your forehead and you feel your forehead, then you have chi there, the more you pack in a place the more you will feel it. where your mind goes the chi follows.

    I would say do not focus on hormones, they are a by product of meditation that the whole body would feel, not just the specific location.

    try the following: with your eyes closed, smile into your eyes and into your forehead.
    smile behind your eyes.
    Look into the darkness and smile to the back of your head, (the jade pillow).

    (did you try to spiral your finger in front of the tingling sensation?)

    I know I might sound like an idiot now, but smiling into my eyes... how would one do that ? Do I simply think positive and concentrate on my eyes ? actually smiling with my mouth in the process ?

    Just wanted to make sure I understand you correctly :)

    Edwin I always begin by listening to a guided Chakra clearing CD. I work my way up from the root Chakra visualising each one (as mentioned you are guided through this) and by the time I reach my Third Eye Chakra I have this strong vibrating sensation in the middle of my forehead. I can see my Third Eye through visualisation and ask it to open fully for me. I don't have any real secret to how this happens it just does.

    By the time I'm finished with the Chakra meditation I listen to Life Flow 10 for 20-30 mins and as mentioned the vibration can continue as long as I remain present and focused.

    One of the main changes for me has been working on my presence & oneness with everything around me in my day to day life. I have recently read Eckharte Tolles The Power of Now and am currently reading New Earth. These books have totally changed my outlook and how I perceive life and I highly recommend them to all (read Power of Now first)

    I don't know if that is of any help but I'm pretty new to all this and I'm just trying to find my way and understand as probably you are. :)

    lebourdonant thanks for your thoughts on this, it's appreciated. I'm with Edwin here, could explain the smiling into your forehead method. I don't really understand how to achieve this.

    Also, I will try to Spiral my finger when I next meditate.
    What sort of reaction should I be looking for ????

    Wow that is some interesting stuff for me to look into !
    I have sent you an email, and I have to say I think it is quite discrete of you to not want to promote other products in this forum !

    Pollyanna also refers to some very interesting books somewhere in this forum, I have quite a library to go through, but if they all do for me what meditation has done so far, I have quite a future ahead of me :D

    I don't know enough about Chakra meditation and Kundalini experiences and although I personally think it sounds really quite scary, I am not judging it. I found the following info out for you from the net. I notice you say you are new to meditation and if this is so just be careful.Happiness and joy to you :) :) :)

    "CHAKRA MEDITATION
    There is a special type of concentrative meditation which we will call 'Chakra meditation'. This is basicly Kundalini yoga -- the practice of causing psychic energy (kundalini) to flow up sushumna, energizing the various chakras along the way. The practice, considered dangerous by some, will produce deffinite physiological sensations and psychological effects if continued long enough. It should not be attempted by epileptics or persons with an unstable mental or physical condition, or with heart disease. Certain drugs and medications, such as those used to treat epilepsy may retard progress. Although the technique is very simple, it may eventually produce powerful results. Results may at first appear hours after the practice during sleep. As each chakra is energized by this practice, it is said to add occult powers (sidhis), until at last the crown chakra is reached, and with it, full enlightenment is attained. Sometimes kundalini awakens all by itself

    To practice this chakra meditation, you simply concentrate on the chakras, beginning with the root chakra, and moving progressively up, as you visualize psychic energy from the root chakra traveling up shushumna and vivifying each higher chakra. As we mentioned the chakras have certain properties associated with them, so that this type of visualization may 'raise consciousness', promote astral projection, and other things -- once you have reached ajna and eventually the crown chakra. You might typically meditate in this fashion for 15 minutes to a half hour a day. It might help to practice some hatha yoga or other physical exercise in an effort to make the spinal cord 'more flexible'. Diet may also affect the process. The technique is also similar to the Tibetan 'Tummo' meditation. The rise of kundalini is sometimes experienced as a 'vibration' or buzzing, as light, or as heat."

    Hi Scotsman!

    Weighing in on this interesting discussion!

    Nice to hear a fellow kinesthetic experience. I, too, get all sorts of tingles and waves of sensations. Fun, right? The overriding feeling for me is one of expansion, like I have tapped into my light body and feel it growing and expanding as I place my attention on it. This does translate well into the chakra arena. My personal experience is an all over body vibration with a concentration in the hands and heart.

    I have heard that people gravitate towards a particular sense when meditating- auditory, visual, or kinesthetic. We can certainly play with all three, but one will notice a dominate sense. The meaning of this is two-fold: the technique of meditation is usually in your primary sense. For example, for me, I get really deep when I choose to "feel" my breath in my body. Also, whichever technique one chooses, the primary sense will eventually come to the forefront. So, even if I do a juicy visualization, the expansive feeling I tap into eventually upstages everything else.

    When I first experienced this, I thought perhaps I was destined to go into energy healing... reiki, chakra work, etc... This hasn't happened as of yet, but the sensations continue to be such a wonderful and powerful experience for me that it doesn't matter. I try not to read too much into it and just enjoy what is showing up for me.

    Very interesting stuff, I've read up on the Kudalini info and it scares the hell out of me. Some people's experiences have totally taken over their lives with a lot of pain and suffering involved.

    Don't think I fancy going down that road but i will take care with future meditations.I appreciate your efforts sourcing that material and once again thank you very much :):):)

    Smilling meditation helps relax, relaxation helps feeling.

    Hello friends,

    *** smiling into your eyes: physically smile, from inside-out, connect with your eyes, and smile into your eyes..just smile :eek:

    intend and let it happened.
    smile with the corners of your eyes,
    smile into your forehead and make it soft and warm.
    relax your eyes.
    you can also imagine/ visualize receiving the smile of a loved one into your forehead, like a beam of love.

    As a way of helping the whole body relax fast, smiling meditation is efficient. you can "connect" to other organs and smile to them... smile to them and try to see them, give so much love and attention that they smile back to you.


    just a bit for the rational:
    your parasympathetic and sympathetic nerves (autonomous nervous system) are connected to your eyes, when you relax your eyes, you put the two nerves in sync. the absence of sync can be described as "stress" when one of the nerves (para..) sent to the body the information to slow down and at the same time, the other one (symp..) tell the organs to speed up. dissonance hinders health.

    Kundalini and chakra

    are two distinct concepts,

    the body has numerous energy centers located along lines (energy lines or meridians). Like hubs, energy points store and redistribute energy along the channel. The hub is being fed, and it will feed.
    Also some points, the major ones, act as step up/down transformer.
    An energy center should receive energy within its acceptance limit (like a frequency spectrum).

    The issue with kundalini is that it playing with "raw" sexual energy, the energy is send through the spine to the head.
    Kundalini is a sharp practice, since energy is powerful it can either help or destroy.

    The threat with kundalini is to refine the energy so that it is accepted by other centers (and that the other centers are able to refine the energy in turn), and minimum should be to bring it down the front channel (with the tongue connected to the top of the mouth) to the navel upon session ending.
    Neurones are very sensitive to heat (energy) and one can damage his brain by giving them excess heat.


    there are ways to prepare the flow of energy in the body (and kundalini) gently and softly. Meditating on an energy center, so that it can handle more energy, meditating on the opposite center, meditating on the vortex created from the exchange between the two poles (Chakras); moving the energy from a center to another so that the connection be cleared and strengthened and a highway be created from a path.

    "caduceus hermes" is regarded as a symbol for kundalini! with what is it normally associated ? :D

    Hey JulieZ,

    I thought your post was was very interesting.

    I think I am definitley Kinisthetic as when i get really deep, I feel tingling and pleasurable sensations mostly. :p

    I remember one time when I think I must have really over-meditated and as much as it felt great whilst meditating afterwards my body was wracked with pain and really uncomfortable sensations. I am talking way over an hour of meditating here though.

    lebourdonant I think nobody can be writing too much about meditation, and you certainly have some very interesting stuff written down there :)

    I have re-read it about 3 times allready througout the week, and I have tried "smiling into my eyes" yesterday evening. I have to say, it's not as easy as it seems, but I will try again tonight :) I like the concept !

    Hi Scotsman!

    Yes, the sensation you're getting in your third eye is totally normal, though not everyone feels it with the same intensity. The buzzing/tingling/vibrating sensation you describe is a classic sign of chi movement and an opening chakra.

    Try this: use the tip of your finger to *lightly* scratch the knuckle at the base of your thumb in a counter-clockwise motion for a moment to "highlight" the joint. Now focus your awareness just under the surface of your skin and move it in little counter-clockwise circles until you start to feel a buzzing, tingling, heaviness, vibrating, etc. in the joint. This sensation is caused by the stimulation of the chi in that area, which is actually the location of a "secondary chakra." This is exactly the same thing that's happening in your third eye--your meditation is obviously stimulating that chakra pretty strongly, which is great.

    Hey Scotsman, thats amazing! I came to this site because I started getting these buzzing and "pulling" (magnetic) sensations while doing a meditation. I got this meditation off the Power of Now audio series where he suggests focussing on the energy feilds of the body without visual imagery or external stimulation - just siting there for 10-15min. I have meditated before but never had these kinds of experiences before. I thought mine might be related to the third-eye because I got the buzzing and pulling mostly around the temple today. Prior to that it was centered on my chest area and around the back. Veryt strange but very cool to so would also love to hear about peoples theories. I was very suprised to see that this started for you once in the Power of Now.
