Default meditating on letting go.

many years of my life, guilt has been a reoccurring emotion. for issues small and large, its just something thats held me back mentally and spiritually for a long time. i've already taken steps(confessions, acceptance, but it still lingers)

i want to overcome this issue, by use of meditation. What are some mantras or techniques anyone can recommend?

or for anyone here that has maybe had a similar disorder?
any advice is appreciated, thank you

Hi,

Meditation practice is useful to allow you to make an objective assessment of what is really going on and to see "what is".

Guilt by its very nature tends to be in the realm of "right - wrong" thinking. That is, I feel guilty because I have done something wrong or someone judges me to have done something wrong. It tends to have strong judgemental overtones - usually in the negative.

Letting go of guilt usually means letting go of right - wrong thinking. The meditative enquiry may take you to a range of places to assess this dualistic way of thinking.

One useful way to see things differently may be to see things on a continuum. For example (to help illustrate) think of light and dark. In reality there is no such thing as darkeness. There is just varying degrees of presence of light on a continuum from full light to absence of light. Similarly with just about everything else we like to classify as opposites you will find it is really about the degree of presence of one thing - not two. Humans are masters at attaching meaning to things which in reality are not there.

A visual exercise to help is to draw a horizontal line in front of you. Label each end the opposite, e.g. hot and cold, wet and dry, love and hate, etc. Then cross out the word which seems negative and think of it in degrees of presence of one element ony - such as degrees of presence of heat, presence of water, presence of love.

The realisation of this, I am certain, will be very liberating.

Nothing but the best...

Olmate

Hey there,

As always, just adding my 5 cents.

All you have to do is to completly and utterly accept yourself. Every shape, every colour, everything that makes you "you". The good and the bad, the light and the dark. When you meditate and theres a thought about guilt, or the past, just accept it as a part of yours. Just love yourself, and remember, no one is perfect in this world. Its quite impossible to be.

Atb,
Phil

its almost like an obsessive problem. I lied to two people, confessed to both. and my mind still tells me its not good enough. That i should go back and give detailed confessions(obviously an irrational and highly-obsessive thought.)

I CAN and WILL overcome this.
off to meditate!

but i appreciate input from both of you! very helpful! thanks
