Hugbear,
I'm not sure if you recognize the irony in your post above:
"I am going out of my mind," followed by "I don't feel stressed and am not working so have nothing to stress about."
I do believe "going out of my mind" is an excellent synonym for "I am stressed."
Life is full of stresses for everyone with a pulse, even when nothing in particular stands out to us. Sometimes we've been living in a state of perpetual stress for such a prolonged period we can't even appreciate that fact any more. You say you have nothing to stress about because you're not working. I can think of millions of people not working at the moment who are extremely stressed over that very fact. Unemployment is stressful.
Perhaps you are not working because your financial needs are met already by a parent or a spouse, so you don't have to work out of economic necessity. We humans are creatures born to work. It's in our nature to want to contribute and produce something, whether that's for monetary compensation or just for the sense of having given of ourselves and made a difference. When we coast in our lives and contribute nothing, for most of us, that's stressful. It's a violation of our nature and if done for long enough it wears on our sense of self-worth and self-esteem. That's really stressful.
Point being, just because you are not working doesn't necessarily mean that causes you no stress. It can be a source of stress as noted above for varying reasons.
The very fact that you have these ulcers has got to be stressful. The inability of your physicians so far to successfully treat them must also be frustrating and therefore stressful. You personality type and, as Itlandm pointed out, even your genetic propensities may also play a role in turning a whole host of minor stressors into a force strong enough to act as a catalyst for ulcers.
If I might make a suggestion, seek out a naturopathic physician or even an osteopathic physician and let them examine and consult with you. Chronic conditions, such as your ulcers, are usually the result of a combination of factors. Genetics, personality, diet, lifestyle, immunological, psychological...all these things and more. There is no pill that can address them all, and clearly the advice you've been given so far to "unstress" yourself has not been sufficiently clear or detailed enough for you to successfully carry it out.
Naturophatic physicians and, to some degree, osteopathic doctors, typically approach a chronic problem from a broader perspective. In today's modern health care system, especially in the US, most doctors are able to spend on average about 6 minutes of time during a typical office visit with each patient. The system in which they work requires them to make a rapid assessment, recommend a treatment, and move on to the next patient. That usually means a prescription of some kind, as you've already experienced. A naturopathic physician is more likely to spend a significant amount of time with you, trying to get a feel for your overall situation. He or she will seek to identify the factors contributing to your chronic condition and then to chart a course towards correcting those root causes such that the problem is resolved. This is a very different approach. They won't look to suppress symptoms so much as to correct contributing causes.
I strongly encourage you to seek out this second type of treatment. I'm not suggesting you toss out your regular doctor. You want to cover as many angles as possible in resolving this, and that includes your regular physician. I'm merely saying that standard, allopathic medical treatment is not the only form of treatment, and for some types of chronic problems it may not even be the best type of treatment. If you haven't gotten the results from it that you were looking for so far, give the alternative a try. It may produce better results for you.
