A Question for Lifeflow Users
I was asked a question at the weekend.
Is it ok to meditate with sound deadening earplugs?
My first response was NO, but on reflection if entrainment users, of which there are many thousand (I assume) use headphones or in-ear buds, to meditate successfully, then what is the difference?
I’m not a Lifeflow user. I practice without the aid of entrainment, headphones or in-ear buds. So I’ll be intrigued by your answers.
Peace

Mindmachine? Sounds painful
Hi Pan,
I think you misinterpreted my question. It was aimed at normal vanilla meditation, no music, guidance or entrainment.
The question is regarding earplugs being used as an aid to meditation to block loud external sounds?

I don't see that using such earplugs would prevent meditation, but one could say that someone who can truly reach a meditative state does not needs such aids.

Ah! Yes, that was my first reaction when asked
but would that not be true for entrainment too?
Most close their eyes is that not one of the senses too?

Hi Karmoh,
I'm curious as to why you'd say no
As I see it, as you mention above, most people close there eyes when meditating so isn't this just effectively doing the same with the ears? Just shutting off some stimuli that could be distracting?
Also Giles mentions, I would expect someone advanced in meditation to be able meditate with with ears (and eyes ) open.

Hi Paul,
Initially I said no, conditioning? Maybe, I learnt to meditate “au naturel” (no, not naked) no music, entrainment, etc. Just simply sitting and being still, watching the breath. If there was noise then that was part of the meditation, I dealt with it like thoughts, it comes and goes.
My wife’s friend asked, she likes to take 20 mins at lunchtime to sit quiet, this has evolved into a meditation and she would like to go deeper, but gets distracted by outside noise.
Ask a tradionalist like me and we'd say no, so i thought I'd ask poeple that cover their ears and listen to entrainment.
Peace

Fair enough
Actually, only until recently I thought meditation should really be carried out in an environment of total silence and I’d get annoyed with loud external noises during it. Then I twigged that the sounds are just something to be acknowledged but not bought into, exactly like those pesky thoughts!
So you've never been tempted by LF? I meditate with and without but I'm and although you sound like a more seasoned meditator than myself I'm surprised you've never dipped your toe in just to see if it makes any difference.

Hi Paul,
Seasoned nah! not at 50, I'm a young pup Pragmatic maybe
Lifeflow? Tempted yes and have come close to buying, but my meditations are just fine, each day is different, I take it as it comes. I did try another "cheap" product awhile back, but wasn't impressed, so went back to what works, my cushion, a quite space and a warm blanket.
Although I do have Classical Magic and Peace & Harmony and I love them both, for working, reading and relaxing.
Peace
