I would just like to add a caution to using reading to help sleep. This was suggested to me many moons ago. And it became a very successful antidote; so much so, I would fall asleep reading anywhere, literally anywhere!

It took a long time to recovery...

Default sleepy read

yes!

I can recommend reading to sleep - it happens so fast with me, I wake up in the morning with the light still on and the book open.

Also works anywhere in broad daylight - in the bath, on the bus, cuddled up on the settee, sitting by the river.

When I was young (when was that now?) I read clandestinely with a torch under the bedclothes and it was no problem - I could easily finish my library book.

Now its a few pages and whump

Yes it can. Lying down is usually an indicator to the body that you are ready to sleep, so if you try meditating lying down, it's far easier to fall asleep during the meditation that if you are sitting (unless you are sitting in a comfy chair with your head supported and then it can be just as easy to fall asleep).

That's the usual case anyway, but everybody is different and you just need to find what works for you.
