Default My first step into a new experience

Hey

Seems my last post failed so I'll try again. I'll keep this as brief as possible, however I do want to share my first experiences of meditation in enough detail according to memory. Today I tried my first meditation. I have read up on meditation and even watched youtube uploads on the benefits of meditation, and really felt a pull towards this practice. I sat quiet in my bedroom, next to the window, with no sound present other than the birds tweeting in the trees. Having positioned myself comfortable with legs crossed and a straight back, concentration began on my inhalation and exhalation, not allowing access of any thoughts. After a while of this concentration, I noticed my breaths becoming shorter and shorter until I finally reached full relaxation. From what I can recall of this experience, the highlight of my meditation was experiencing a flickering/flashing colour of violet, which I was focussinng on for some time. This process lasted for about 15-20 mins when my son, who at the time was asleep and being looked after by my girlfriend's dad woke up and began crying, which broke me out of my meditated state. However, I really felt relaxed once I came back round, and felt pleasantly suprised with my first attempt at meditation. Even though I had a level of knowledge to meditation, I never actually thought it would work for me, well at least not on first attempt, so I am keen to try this again as soon as possible. Based on the colours/visuals/experience I had today I'd love to hear comments from other beginners and their experience, as well as other people who are quite experienced with meditation. Many thanks.

Well, I'm not a beginner, but firstly, welcome to the Project Meditation community.

As for the things we experience during a meditation session, it's quite normal for people to experience all sorts of different things, from colours, visual images, sounds, feelings (good and "bad" emotions etc.) and all sorts. The best thing to do is to simply accept that these things will arise, acknowledge them and bring your focus back to the meditation practice, then, if you finish your meditation practice and that things you experienced was of importance you will remember it and it's meaning will intuitively be apparent to you (if not, let it go and carry on)

Hugs

Giles

Hi flickeringviolet,

RE: those violet/purple swirling images, I have been meditating for around 5 years, those images have been with me on almost every session. At first, I believed they were thoughts that were forming and then fading, and I put a great deal of effort in to watching them. But this was an error on my part for if nothing spectacular happened my meditation was deemed unsuccessful.
Now I just let them dance if they want and fade when they want, it’s just a pleasant side effect.

You are on the right track

Peace
