Gidday, yeh it would be interesting to compare in the same way, and in the same testing procedure a range of meditation techniques and aids, and the results produced.
Buddhist meditation is very disciplined, and requires and fosters one pointed concentration and focus, and control of the mind, which in turn fosters a sense of not being the mind. Sites quote 'scientific' results, which have been obtained from Buddhist meditation styles.
However to be labelled scientific, they need to be results from the meditation style being discussed or promoted. That would be a great way for people to evaluate techniques. However, obviously the individual meditating also has a huge effect on any results.

Thanks for the website Giles Alzeimers and other related diseases can seem such a long way off for many people, especially the young. I personally believe in "prevention is better than cure" and the more reports like this will help to educate everyone on the short and longterm benefits of meditation. Wishing you much peace and joy

I agree wholeheartedly on the benefits to people, or societies by learning about meditation. The way that information is presented has a huge effect on its acceptance, how it is viewed, and its value to people.

Western society is very influenced and reliant on science as a shaper of thinking, and science has very defined protocols in judging information. All that could scientifically be drawn from the article, is that elite, disciplined, experienced Tibetan Monks practising a very particular style of meditation receive certain benefits. This is awesome, deluxe. However, even from a non scientific, from a Spiritual viewpoint, the only truth that can be found is that by following that particular meditation style and lifestyle:

TIBETAN BUDDHIST MEDITATION with OLE NYDAHL, Ph.D.

those benefits would be obtained.

Otherwise, its like saying that elite, disciplined sprinters have incredible anaerobic development and fast twitch muscle development, then concluding that any running style, or effort will result in that outcome. Information presented in that way is viewed with much scepticism by a society programmed to think along the lines of science.

The worst case scenario is that that angle can also be used to manipulate inexeperienced people, causing more widespread disallusionment and scepticism, ala the likes of:

Ab Toners | Slendertone Flex Belt System, Ab Rocket, Ab Circle Pro & Other Ab Machine Reviews

Spiritual Teachers highlight the importance of Truth, Love and care, everywhere, at all times, and I think we need to exercise the utmost Truth, Love and care when presenting important information, which is really just honouring and respecting our Truth, Ourself.

Interesting stuff Ramai. Several issues are crystal clear. The Tibetan Buddhist meditation technique, if practised diligently, produces genuine, dramatic results. Also the Monks are egoless, fearless, honest and confident enough to participate in a procedure aimed at helping people.
An obvious direction and opportunity has been presented. It would be a win, win situation for long time practitioners, of Lifeflow, Holyosync, Morry Method, etc, etc to join in the scientists’ honest endeavours. The tests, which are identical to which the Tibetan Buddhist Monks undergo, would either show that yes, the various methods do produce and speed up obtaining the results obtained by the Buddhist Monks, as advertised and promoted, or the results would highlight otherwise.
Personally, I would love to see the former scenario ring true. However, should that not be the case, it would be an extremely beneficial and usefull way of seeing that a change in technique was called for. Anyone truly interested in achieving Oneness, who had put in enough time and effort, would welcome the finding, the Truth, and wholeheartedly embrace changing a method not producing what it was meant to.
One part would run a mile from the Truth and reject it wholeheartedly. It would cling and hang on for dear life, absolutely attached to and identified with the not Truth. The stories, scenarios, games, claims and dramatics would be incredible! Ego in full flight!
It could genuinely be very enlightening.

Another article I just happened across posted today on the Healthypages site I moderate on, with more scientific based studies (from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School) supporting meditation...

Mind Control Of Alpha Rhythms

I think the more science keeps looking at the benefits of meditation, the more acceptable and more accessible it will become for everyone.

Thanks for the links provided above too. Interesting stuff.
