Well, Peanutbutter, I think everyone who starts meditation feels as you do...in the beginning. And there's no great reason to envy those who later achieve some focus. It's quite a natural process, and everybody goes at their own pace, in their own direction.
I must say the best "early" advice I could give is just very GENTLY bring your attention back where you want it...without beating yourself up about it. In meditation, there really is no such thing as failure. It's inevitable that your mind will try to wander. And just as inevitable that you'll achieve wonders in the process of discovering what to do about that.
