Default When sitting to meditate what is the best position?

Hi,

When sitting to meditate what is the best position?
Like should my legs be crossed or not?
Should my arms be folded or not?

Hi John !

Most meditation postures are a bit unconfortable.

This is because a lot of people, especially those that have the intention to meditate for a longer period of time ( let's say, about 30 minutes to an hour ) have the tendency to fall asleep when not moving.

However, some postures can be really challenging. For instance, the Lotus position is best known as a meditation posture.


I can only maintain this one for about 20 seconds. It hurts too much to my legs. Of course it would be silly if I would try to sit in this posture for half an hour. It would be very painfull, and the pain would not help my meditation.
I should experience slight discomfort, not pain.

I myself like 2 meditation postures:

The half lotus position. One leg is resting on the floor instead of the other leg.


The Seiza posture. I also know this posture from my Ju Jitsu trainings. It is the traditional posture for Japanese people at formal dinners. It is a more active posture, like one would expect from a martial arts posture. Even tho you can sit relaxed, it is easyer to stand up and defend yourself in this position.

However there are also several people in this forum who can meditate while lying down on their bed. For me unfortunately that is not an option, because in a few minutes I will be snoring instead of chanting.

So, in the end, it is not about what the best position is for meditation, but what is the best position for you.
Try them, and stick with the one you like best for a while. But feel free to change position every now and then. Why not !

Me, I just sit upright in a comfortable chair.
There's little point in being uncomfortable, especially if it's going to make your legs go to sleep, so make yourself comfortable, but not such that you can fall asleep easily yourself.
i.e. don't meditate lying down and choose a chair where your head is not supported but your lower back is.

Really you just have to find what is best for yourself.

Lightbulb Just what Ta-Tsu-wa ordered (and others here)..........

Hi Pan,
Ever since you posted your meditation stool picture I have wondered about using one. I am really unflexible and such a meditation tool may be just what I need. I have been lying in bed as PollyAnna does yet I believe that her background in meditation may help her to "stay aware" during her sessions..........I keep falling asleep .

So since I am currently on LF7 I really feel that my progress has been diminished by not maintaining an "awareness" during meditation. I may very well backtrack to LF10 and apply proper technique for another LifeFlow "restart". Since I know the LF series is my lifelong tool "restarting" my journey does not concern me at all. It was a few of Ta-Tsu-wa's post's over the last few weeks that have been giving me a "rethink" of my LifeFlow use. It is an "aid" for meditation. I have been using it like an "entrainment junkie"..........

Pan, by any chance could you please measure the wood components of your meditation stool? I am 5 ft. 8 inches which is 73 cm in metric if you perhaps are close in height I might be "all set" if I built a stool using your measurements.

P.S. I have really enjoyed reading about your progress over the last few months. You have made "real" progress as you have applied LifeFlow to it's optimum .

Regarding meditating while in bed: doesn't this go against the principle that, while meditating, some part of your body should be "grounded" (as in touching the terrain / floor)?

I always restrained from meditating lying down, even if I think this would be my preferred position, because of this...

Lying down is simply an indication to our physical selves that it is time to rest/sleep and hence the body will often drift off into sleep. (I could go into the 3 Guna of vedic teachings and how they effect us, but that's a bit heavy philosophy for this time in the morning (for me! hehe!))

As for being "grounded" that is a spiritual aspect of belief... almost an attachment to the physical realm in which we are apparent. When we meditate we are leaving attachments behind, so there really is no need to be "grounded". The only need to ground, IMHO, is when we return from the state of meditation back the physical, to allow ourselves to re-orientate before getting on with our daily lives.

Hey jim,

Sorry for the late post, i just oversaw your post :-|

For me, meditation and Lifeflow are two different things. My meditation has greatly increased since i begun, in fact i didnt really meditated for about a half year because my mind was full of garbage. Nevertheless, Lifeflow always did what its supposed to do...in my case, it just needs a little bit of concentration and quietness. Anyway, everyones different...hope you experience at least the same what i experience with Lifeflow, regardless of the level.

Yes, i progressed! Im a much more balanced (was i even balanced in some way before? lol) person, i have a lot more energy and my awareness is increasing. At the moment, all those benefits increase the unhealthy things i did (or tried to do) before a lot - playing 5h xbox, meeting 2-4 girls a week, doing regular workout, serving my customers - living my life (which i couldnt do very well before)! Im going to my limits every day because i still dont feel them hehe... maybe when i fulfilled my needs, im ready to go into the real deep levels of beeing and dont need to push me over my limits to feel them :-)

I made a pic for you with the measurements of the chair, hope this helps! If you need some more data, just tell me.

Superb photo setup Pan! Once you just tell me the height and wideth of the back of the stand I will be all set!!! The height is especially important as it dictates the angle of the stool.
