Default First meditation experience

Hello all

I meditated for the first time today I'm not sure what to make of the experience just yet. I forgot to turn my phone off and of course got a call about 5 minutes in. After getting back into it though I had an interesting experience. I closed my eyes, started focusing on my mantra and it felt like a only a few moments had passed when I glanced at my watch and 25 minutes had passed. It didnt feel like 25 minutes. Im not sure if I fell asleep or reached that special state of relaxation. Either way it was a positive experience. Has anyone experienced this before?

Heyo,

That's absolutely normal for me when meditating. Fourty minutes will feel like five minutes sometimes. I've fallen asleep numerous times when meditating (usually if I am tired or meditate later in the day), even though sometimes after a meditation session it would feel like I fell asleep, I don't think I actually did.

So far what I've learned, it's different for everyone. The best you can do is continue reading these forums, and just generally educating yourself on this topic. And most importantly just continue meditating and experience it yourself.

Hi there, I used to fall asleep quite often in the beginning - I just wasn't used to being so deeply relaxed. Often now, while meditating I seem to be aware of a deep joy, yet it is not a feeling and I also often become unaware of time or the space I'm in.

It's really difficult for me to explain - but I enjoy it and I always find it has refreshed me for the rest of the day. I wish you peace and joy on your journey

Sounds like you are doing wonderfully. If you remember to keep up your mantra you are not falling asleep. At least I doubt you are anyway. There is a place between falling asleep and awareness.

I think it was Rumi that said he would meet us there.
