When I tell my subconscious "I am my ideal weight", it replies: "Great, now give me some food so we can stay that way."

Affirmations work better for back pain and such though, but generally I have found it more effective to avoid situations that cause the unwanted effects. Avoiding an undesired place is a lot easier if you start going in the opposite direction from the start, compared to running hard once you are almost there.

The problem is that there is usually something you want right nearby what you don't want. For instance we want the cakes but we don't want to be fat. We want to sit in a soft couch all day but we don't want back pains. We want to avoid responsibility for our own life but we don't want to be controlled by others or worry about their judgment. We can keep up this charade by constantly talking to ourselves and explaining and explaining. But watching our own behavior in silence makes it gradually obvious what we are doing.

Pan, I am not sure if you are ready for this yet. Maybe you should find out if there is going to be a Satsang with a good teacher near where you live. The (rather famous)teachers where I recognise silence with are Mooji, Eckhart Tolle, Adyashanti, Thich Nhat Hanh ( you can find him in Buddhistic gatherings ).
You have been through a lot in your life, and I don't want to be responsible for you going through emotional turmoil without someone experienced in knowing how to guide you through that.
Things you can do is check out these website's:
In English...
Amigo, unconditional friendship
Read through them, and wait for small insights to come. Don't force anything.

Flossie,

All you have to do is try the excersise as described here:
Taking a step into the world of our Being
and read through the replies made by Ta-Tsu-Wa and GilesC after that post.
Some excellent suggestions have been made by them if the "Who am I" meditation doesn't work.
If no insight comes, don't worry.
If something does happen, report back here.
If you have trouble with processing what happened, you have to report back here.

I will be going on holiday next week for about 2-3 weeks, but I won't leave before wednesday, and I gladly leave you in the capable hands of Giles and Ta-Tsu-Wa should you have issues.
Hi Edwin

I am not sure if you are on holiday or not yet. I think I may be being a little dumb but I copied your instructions, took them home, then in a quiet moment read them, then read them again and finally read them once more and to be honest I have no clue what I am supposed to be doing. Do I do this all the time during the day, do I do it whilst I am meditating. You couldnt do an idiots guide could you? I would be very grateful.

thanks a lot

April

Going on holiday tomorrow you just caught me.

It is something you can do in meditation, which is easyer, and/or in daily life, which is life changing.

The most important thing to remember is that thoughts and feelings that occur, occur in conciousness. You can become aware of that, by observing them.

The next exercise is based on Douglas Harding's experiment:
Suppose you have a boulder in your garden.
You are looking at it, and outside, it is grey.
You would like to know what it looks like inside. But you can't.
So, in the end, you cut it in half. But, instead of looking at the inside of the boulder, you are looking at the outside of 2 boulders. So, you split them in half again. Still only the outside.
You keep chipping away, until you have a bag of sand. And you can still keep chipping that into smaller pieces. Until you arrive at the atom. But is that the inside of the boulder ? What boulder ?

Now look at your body. Your hands and feet. Is that really yours ? You are inclined to say "yes". But you look at your hands from the outside. You can't look inside, or "be" inside it. You have control over them, so you say "my hand" or "My foot".
But essentially, what is the difference between the empty glass on the table that your hand is resting next ? They are both just objects, made out of atoms. Ok, you will know the difference when you hit them with a hammer, but that is a different story.

Now follow your hands and feet up, your legs and arms, shoulder and body, all can be observed from the outside. It is a collection of atoms. An object.
follow them up. Now you see only a hint of a nose, the edges of the eyesockets maybe... But then, you only notice the place from where you are seeing. The eye itself. The object ends, and perception begins. The perception is subjective, you can describe what it is like, but essentially only you can experience what you are experiencing.
Can you look deeper ? Go back further. All you can experience, is nothingness right ? There is nothing behind the eyes, because this is the realm of the Self. Try to just see in. All you have been seeing so far is the outside of objects. But the one seeing, you, is not an object. We have accepted always that we are there. But never taken the trouble of trying to investigate the looker.

Try to find out who you really are. Try to observe the self. As long as you see yourself, it can't be you. If you are looking into a seeming abyss, unable to see yourself, that is you.

If you succeed in this, go back to my other exercise and try it again.

Thanks for your helpful reply guys!

Sure, if you run up-wind, you will escape the smell for a while, but you can only run for so long, or maybe the direction of the wind will change and you will smell the backpack again. YOU ARE STILL CARRYING IT WITH YOU.
And even worse, by fighting it, you are actually banging the backpack, hoping the skunk will stop it's spraying, and it actually makes it more mad, spraying even harder.´
I like that analogy...in fact its really helpful to take distance when im into such feelings.

...

Once you learn how to observe, to take your distance from the phenomena of your mind and body, and have watched the one or maybe several reasons for your insecurity, report back. One step at a time. If you want to move faster ( yes I recognised that in you ) there is a way to get there faster. Start with my excercise quicker
Weird thing is, that there was a time when i did this naturally. I stopped it though, cause i thought this is not the way it is meant. Hmpf, now i gotta start from scratch

However, by repeating the affirmation over and over, several times a day, our unconscious mind comes to believe it (regardless of the conscious mind), and awakens our awareness to the things around us that will allow us to achieve that belief. It is awareness in the present moment that allows us to achieve our desires.
Thanks for your hints on affirmations! Few weeks ago i read about a new
scientific research regarding positive affirmations and how they can turn around into something negative for people with less self esteem. Thats exactly what i experienced when i tried it with affirmations for a while (twice so far)...so im a little afraid to try it again :-/

This is the article (only bad google translation):
Google Übersetzer

Be aware of the sound of the voice (yours and the other persons) when you are communicating. You don't have to focus or try to analyse the sounds you are hearing, as you will be focused on the content of the conversation, but simply let the awareness rest with the sounds. This may take practice, but, as they say... practice makes perfect.

Giles
Interesting, ill try that...thanks!

Thanks again, thats some more coins into your karma piggybank! ;-)
